30-Minute Eyelid Surgery Creates Refreshed, Alert Appearance
A new cosmetic use for an established eyelid surgery can create
a refreshed, alert appearance in just 30 minutes. Dr. Jonathan Hoenig,
oculofacial plastic surgeon at the Assil Sinskey Cosmetic Center
is applying the reconstructive technique of "eyelid
ptosis repair" used to lift droopy eyelids to treat patients
with cosmetic concerns of looking sad, tired or sleepy.
"Frequently, many surgeons will perform
standard eyelid surgery to remove
skin and fat when a patient presents complaining of looking sad
or aged. But often, the patient still looks tired, even after surgery
and the reason for this may be a weak upper eyelid muscle, "explains
Dr. Hoenig. Drooping eyelids often occur as the eyelid muscle stretches
with age, but the problem can be exacerbated by damage to the thin
eyelid muscle especially in people with environmental allergies
who rub their eyes frequently.
Determination of a lowered eyelid can be made during the office
consultation. To do this, Dr. Hoenig measures the eyelid in relation
to the pupil and then tests the eyelid muscle by instilling some
eye drops into one eye. If the eyelid rises with the eye drops,
then the patient may be a good candidate for repair of the eyelid
muscle. "Patients are amazed when they see the difference that
raising the lid can create. Since the eye drops mimic the results
of the eyelid raising surgery, they get a good sense of how much
more alert they'll look after surgery," comments Dr. Hoenig.
If necessary, ptosis (sagging eyelid) repair can be performed together
with upper and/or lower eyelid surgery or with other procedures
such as a brow lift, face-lift
or fat transfer surgery.
The procedure takes about 30 minutes and is comfortably performed
in the office operating room with local anesthesia only. For cosmetic
eyelid surgery repair, Dr. Hoenig performs the surgery on the undersurface
of the upper eyelid to gain access to the damaged muscle, so there
are no visible scars. Discomfort is minimal, sutures naturally dissolve
and most patients are back to work in a week.
Considered an expert in facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgery,
Dr. Hoenig has completed three separate fellowships to ensure that
he is qualified to offer the most advanced techniques in facial
surgery: cosmetic and dermatologic surgery, oculo-facial cosmetic
surgery and oculoplastic surgery. He is one of the few cosmetic
surgeons who is a diplomat of the American Society of Ophthalmic
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) and the American Board
of Cosmetic Surgery, as well as board certified by the American
Board of Ophthalmology.
