CHICAGO, June 5 (Reuters) - Allergan Inc., maker of the Botox wrinkle treatment, on Monday said U.S. regulators approved its new dermal filler treatment, Juvederm, targeting the folds alongside the nose and mouth.

Allergan said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had approved Juvederm, which contains the highest concentration of nonanimal and cross-linked hyaluronic acid of any dermal filler currently available.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural complex sugar found in all living organisms. Treatments with Juvederm last up to six months or longer in most patients, Allergan said.

Juvederm, which adds volume to the folds running from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth, is expected to boost sales in Allergan's wrinkle treatment line as top-selling cosmetic procedure Botox faces increased competition.

Botox, which works differently, relaxes the dominant frown muscles between the eyebrows.

Juvederm will compete against market-leading dermal filler Restylane from Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp.

"Based on our discussions with leading cosmetic surgeons/dermatologists, we believe that because of its longer duration, Juvederm is likely to be a better product versus Medicis' Restylane," said Bank of America analyst David Maris, who rates Allergan stock a "buy" and whose firm has done banking for the company.

CIBC World Markets analyst John Calcagnini said that, with Juvederm's approval, Allergan will gain a broader product line to treat a wider range of wrinkle types than Medicis, which will help Allergan take market share.

Irvine, California-based Allergan acquired Juvederm as part of its $3.2 billion purchase of breast-implant maker Inamed Corp., which it completed in March after defeating Medicis in a takeover battle.
